Can my pet eat before surgery?
The answer largely depends on what kind of surgery it is and what kind of anesthetic will be used. If your dog or cat has to be asleep for the surgery, your vet may ask that your pet not eat the morning of the procedure. Eating is generally permitted for small surgeries that only use local anesthesia.
Will my pet have pain?
Every effort is made to keep your pet from feeling pain, but he may be sore after the surgery. Make sure to also ask what kind of medication to give him for the pain. If he isn’t prescribed anything, there may be over-the-counter medications that you can use for pain management, but please make sure you always ask your veterinarian before giving over-the-counter medicine as some medications are not safe for your pets.
How do I care for my pet after surgery?
You will get discharge instructions when you take your pet home. Pets often need some special care after they have had surgery. There may be a cone that your pet has to wear to keep him from biting or licking at the stitches. He may need some help going outside. Depending on the type of surgery, there may be multiple medications or other special instructions to help him heal properly. Be sure to follow any instructions given so that your pet will recover as quickly as possible.
